As a designated affiliate port for OpSail 2012 Virginia™, the town of Cape Charles is working in collaboration with Northampton County to present events commenorating the war of 1812 and the writing of The Star Spangled Banner.

Here is a partial listing of festival events for June 8-12;  Additional events and activities with specific dates and and times will be added as they become available.

Please:  no dogs on leashes unless they are companion animals!

Friday June 8, 2012

  • Parade of Sail – Opsail 2012 Virginia(tm) tall ships parade; Eastern Shore viewing at island 2 of Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel; by advance ticket purchase at this website;  motorcoaches only allowed
  • Kick-off party, ships’ welcoming and music festival at Cape Charles Town Harbor – 5 pm
  • Free public tours of tall ships noon – 5 p.m.
  • Two hour day sail on tall ship Sultana – SOLD OUT! Please select another day at Sail On the Ships page on this website
  • Historic Interpretations –  re-enactor troupe from Raleigh, NC  from 10 a.m.
  • Family fun – Seaworthy Small Ships model boat build and sail, pony rides, face painting, etc.- from 10 a.m.
  • Plein Air - check in at the Arts Enter Gallery 305 Mason Ave. between the hours of 11:00 am-5 pm on June 8th to get your blank canvas stamped.  For the Plein Air guidelines or additional information please visit http://artsentercapecharles.org or contact Ellen Moore on 331-2787.

  • Harbor Party at Cape Charles sponsored by Northampton County Chamber of Commerce – 6 pm
  • Historical Interpretations - re-enactors troupe from Raleigh, NC – all day
  • Family fun:  pony rides; face painting; Seaworthy Small Ships Model Boat build and sail activity; touch tank; games; other activities to be announced – all day
  • Opening reception at  The Stage Door Gallery 301 Mason Avenue featuring original works by artist  Clelia Sheppard and potter Elizabeth Hunt – 6 p.m.
In  Historic Eastville, Northampton County Seat:  Eastville’s Star Spangled Day!
  • A Walk Through Eastville – A Walk Through History – self-guided walking tour – all day
  • Tour the historic Courthouse Green  and historic buildings with costumed docents from Preservation Virginia (PVA) – all day
  • Visit Christ Episcopal Church (c. 1828) – all day
  • Courthouse records  (oldest continuous in U.S. dating to the 1600′s) open for the first time on a weekend — 9 a.m – 1 p.m.
  • Tack Into Eastville and Tie The Knot – marriage licenses issued 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.;  the Clerk of  the Court will conduct weddings and vow renewals at Eastville Town Park – 3 p.m.
  • Music: Native American Flute Instruction and Performance by Alan Stanz – 10 a.m. at the Courthouse Green
  • Opening ceremonies and playing of Star Spangled Banner – 10:30 a.m. – Courthouse Green
  • Speaker, Dr. Paul Ewell: 19th Century Chesapeake Bay Workboats - noon at 1899 Courthouse upstairs
  • Music – “3 Sheets Trio” – noon to 1 p.m. and 2-3 p.m. – Courthouse Green
  • Eastern Woodland Indian  Primitive Weapon Demonstration – Mike “Fierce Arrow” Hinman – 12:30 p.m. behind the old Courthouse
  • Music – The Message Choir spirituals and group ensemble – 1 p.m. Courthouse Green
  • Speaker – Douglas Arvidson: Secrets of the Ancient Pacific Navigators and The War of 1812: The Star Connection-  1:30 p.m. at 1899 Courthouse upstairs
  • Speaker – Accohonnock Indian tribal historian: ancestry and tribal history – 3 p.m. Courthouse Green
  • Music – The Heavenly Wings Over Jordan Gospel Group - 3 p.m. Courthouse Green
  • Crystal Concerts –  two mini-concerts by Dean Shostak using glass instruments  4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church
  • Other events and exhibits include carriage rides, decoy and fish carvers, weaving demonstration, arrowhead collection display, American Indian displays and  demonstrations, Eastern Shore Watermen display, face painting, hair weaving, local artists
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner offered at the Historic Eastville Inn; boxed lunches and served meals available at Yuk Yuk and Joe’s
  • Ice cream by Island Creamery
